Zurich Primary HIV Infection Study (ZPHI)
Since 2002, the ZPHI study has been researching the acute phase of HIV infection, i.e. the first weeks to months after infection. This early phase is crucial, as this is when the latent viral reservoir develops – the main reason why HIV is still incurable to this day.
People with an acute or recently acquired HIV-1 infection are included in the study. Starting early antiretroviral therapy immediately can quickly reduce the viral load, protect the immune system and prevent transmission to others.
The ZPHI forms the basis for numerous research projects at the University Hospital Zurich, the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich and is one of the world’s leading studies in the field of HIV primoinfection.
Checkpoint Zurich is actively involved in the ZPHI study and supports the early detection, enrolment and medical monitoring of newly infected people.
